Orientale Ejecta at the Apollo 14 Landing Site Implies a 200-million-year Stratigraphic Time Shift on the Moon

چکیده
Abstract Detailed spectral mapping, cratering statistics, and impact basin ejecta column estimates document a new very different stratigraphic relationship for the Apollo 14 landing site. We observe resurfacing event in crater size–frequency distribution agreement with single blanketing layer. Using distribution, we determine two relative ages (cumulative frequencies) that match those observed Imbrium Orientale basins, respectively. The pattern strength of morphological distinction by features suggest top layer to be about 10–25 m thick. propose this at site is above ejecta. Such stratigraphy reattributes (majority of) samples rather than implies 3.92 Gyr old, 200 million years older previously suggested. youngest lunar thus formed onset, amid, recorded mare volcanism. This time shift also changes constraints on early planetary solar system processes, such as intensity bombardment, pleads revision crater-statistics-based surface other bodies.

Numerical modeling of the ejecta distribution and formation of the Orientale basin on the Moon
The formation and structure of the Orientale basin on the Moon has been extensively studied in the past; however, estimates of its transient crater size, excavated volume and depth, and ejecta distribution remain uncertain. Here we present a new numerical model to reinvestigate the formation and structure of Orientale basin and better constrain impact parameters such as impactor size and veloci...
متن کاملOptimal Trajectory Planning for the Apollo Moon Landing: Descent, Ascent, and Aborts
This paper presents optimal trajectory solutions for guiding the Apollo Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) to and from the Moon’s surface. GPOPS− II was used to solve the nonlinear control problem, providing full state and control histories for optimal ascent, descent and abort scenarios. Although historically Apollo did not follow an optimal trajectory due to terrain and navigation constraints, the ...
متن کاملAssessment of spectral properties of Apollo 12 landing site
The geology and mineralogy of the Apollo 12 landing site has been the subject of recent studies that this research attempts to complement from a remote sensing point of view using the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) sensor data, onboard the Chandrayaan-1 lunar orbiter. It is a higher spatial-spectral resolution sensor than the Clementine UVVis sensor and gives the opportunity to study the lunar sur...
متن کاملThe Geologic Investigation of the Taurus-littrow Valley: Apollo 17 Landing Site
Astronauts Cernan and Schmitt, of Apollo 17, landed in the Taurus-Littrow valley of the Moon on December 11,1972. Their major objectives were (1) to sample very ancient lunar material such as might be found in pre-Imbrian highlands as distant as possible from the Imbrium basin and (2) to sample pyroclastic materials that had been interpreted as significantly younger than the mare basalts return...
